Berlin-based gallery concept, LUMAS, is now open in Richmond, Melbourne. Boasting a unique and authentic range of art – from photography and digital art to contemporary design pieces, the LUMAS concept gallery aims to make the art market more accessible.

LUMAS is a global success, offering collectors (both new and established) a diverse portfolio of works from 200 established artists and emerging talents via its website and now 40 LUMAS galleries across the world in cities such as London, New York, Zurich, Vienna, Paris and Berlin.

The Richmond LUMAS gallery has been designed to give visitors the feeling of being in an art collector’s home rather than a gallery. Art displayed in the living room, kitchen and library gives visitors a clear idea of how those particular pieces might look in their own homes. All furniture and fittings have been meticulously chosen to create a stylish yet welcoming and approachable space, as opposed to the usual starkness of a traditional gallery.

The gallery will open with an impressive range of limited edition pieces, including best sellers Werner Pawlok and Bernhard Lang as well as Arthur Elgort’s refreshing photos of Kate Moss from the mid-nineties.

We’re back! Lets kick off 2013 with a little fun. Melbourne artists and designers Iggy and Lou Lou have put together a beautiful range of porcelain jewellery with the collections combining a sense of romance and history. We love the tongue in cheek humor – made perfect for modern day lovers!

Iggy and Lou Lou has a dedicated local and international following, appealing to a wide audience including style and music creatives Emily Blunt, Anthony Gonzalez (M83) and Nicole Richie. Collaborations include Karen Walker, Perks & Mini and Chicks on Speed.

From the Makers…

“Home is our favorite creative space. We make and collect objects that are rare and unexpected, mixing ideals of evolution with a sense of history and belonging.

We love the history of clay and its contrasts, the fact that it’s fragile but strong enough to last generations – even dug up after centuries of being forgotten.

With a Masters of Ceramics behind us, there is a strong emphasis on mixing the latest in ceramic technology with traditional making methods. We make everything ourselves in our studio while being very nice to the environment. Getting our hands dirty, we prefer to do the work ourselves rather than machines and use Australian made durable quartz porcelain, kiln fired up to 4 times . Each piece is beautifully handcrafted and meticulously finished.

Drawing on the history and enduring romance of porcelain our work is made to be loved – handmade originals to have and to hold.”

Opening on Thursday 6th December at Ausin Tung Gallery, 164 High Street Prahran is an exhibition of exclusive, limited-edition functional interior design pieces by the world renowned British-born and Hong Kong-based designer Michael Young. The exhibition will run until the 22nd December 2012.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see pieces as diverse as sophisticated highly polished cast aluminum chairs, transformed newspaper based furniture and a marble grave.

Michael sees the work not as Design but as Industrial Art where some of the highest levels of manufacturing have been employed. His decision to centre his practice in China and the integration of the sophisticated manufacturing techniques available there have resulted works that are not only consumer products but works collected by galleries and institutes around the world.

We love that fashion label Saxony blend art and fashion for unique in-store exhibitions. If you are near Saxony’s QV store tonight (15th November) make sure you call in for opening drinks and to see the work of photographer Teru Kuwayama. The exhibition opens at 6:30.

About the Exhibition
Since Alexander the Great, invading armies and peaceful migrations have brought in diverse peoples to this Central Asian crossroads. As a result, Afghanistan is a country of ethnic minorities. The current conflict began in October 2001 and has seen more than 40 nations engaged in a coalition now focused on nation building and democratisation.

Teru Kuwayama is a photographer from New York.  In this exhibition he shares with us images photographed over a decade of travel in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kashmir.  The photographs reflect the spiral in chaos across disputed borders, and people who have endured cycles of warfare, disaster, and the chronic amnesia of the outside world.

For further information about the artist visit Saxony’s Exhibition Page.

Artist and designer Dale Hardiman has produced his first commercial product, a series of biodegradable homewares.

The hand crafted Polly range has been created using biodegradable non-toxic wax with each piece unique in shape and colour as a result of the creation process. Coloured pigments are stretched and folded throughout, then hand moulded over forms leaving one side a perfect finish, and the other textured by the pressing and hand shaping process.

For further information visit dale-hardiman.com. The Polly range is available through Dagmar Rousett on Gertrude Street. Make sure you also check out Dale’s Klag chair which we featured earlier this year.

An intriguing blend of geographic shape and biological forms by jeweller and artist Charles Wyatt. Charles began working in his family’s jewellery shop at the age of 12 where he developed a passion for fine craftsmanship. Moving to Melbourne in 2008 to extend his contemporary practice and went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Gold and Silversmithing) at RMIT University where he received the Maggie Fairweather Gold and Silversmithing Award.

Jewellery and art available from Pieces of Eight Gallery - 28 Russel Place Melbourne.
